I DID NOT PLAN TO BE A WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
I did not planned for my career. I only planned to get out of places that I’m not happy to be, planned to quit doing what I don’t like to do, planned to do what I love. That’s how I became a photographer today. But that was not the only matter that make me who I am today.
I have a bachelor degree in Computer Science. I only worked nine to five for one full year. I quit my job and was actually wandering around for half a year. I was literally taking photography for fun for entire time. I was wandering from beaches to beaches, mountains to mountains and live on a tropical island; Koh Phangan where I’ve met my second half who’s inspired me to be a wedding photographer.
My partner and I met in middle of 2013, and we’ve been together since. We both are so alike and have similar hobbies. And he is also a photographer. He had the whole set for a small studio in his rental house. ( that gear is officially mine now ^__^ )
Hobbies are much more fun when you have someone to share with. I take step forward everyday with my photography skills. I had the eyes of photographer since when I was young. Yeah, when I was wasting films rolls after rolls. Thanks to my parents that prints all those photos out even though there’s my thumb in most of the photos. They indirectly encourage me to do what I like to do. Anyhow, I got completely hooked to photography.
There’s always the chance
One morning my partner got called to replace another photographer to cover a small wedding in a very last minute. I went…” Can I come with you? I won’t bother!? ” and then my unplanned career path began.
So I joined my partner to observe how the weddings flow goes, how they deal with people and picking up all the details I could. On the way back home, I was saying ” I love it! I love seeing those romantic moments and I want to be a wedding photographer “. By saying that, it gave me courage to do so. I was sometimes a second shooter, or sometimes just keep fetching water for the lead photographer. And here I am, running my own business as Destination Wedding Photographer.
Why do I choose to be a wedding photographer?
Well, I love it! So I want to do what I love… simple as that. True that I didn’t have extensive knowledge about photography, but that was years ago. I’ve learned a lot and became more professional everyday.
Knowledge is the key to success, they say. But to me, ambition + mindset = success.
Lucky enough, wedding photographer doesn’t only requires strong photography skills, but people skills, solving problems, and personalities that fits the job. Which I have….YAY!!
AT LEAST I THINK I AM…
- I’m a romantic person
- I’m a friendly person
- I’m an easy going person
- I’m can ease up situations very well
- I’m very adaptive
- I see details
- I see emotions
- I see what I see, and that’s very unique!
- I’m fun
- I’m creative
and much more.
All above traits gave me courage and I told my self that ” Hey! You are good photographer! And with your personality you will be a great wedding photographer” I believe my guts and lucky enough I had a chance to try out!
I was still not so sure if I could be a great wedding photographer. But I slowly get known by people and vendors and that made me kept going. I have to say thank you to all vendors, resort, and supporters. Without you guys, I might not keep going forward.
There’s always the one
There’s one wedding organizer that I will never forget; Phangan Weddings was the one who gave me a chance. Maybe they saw my hidden talents or maybe they couldn’t find anyone. But the first paid wedding shoot, proved that I could be a really bad ass wedding photographer. It might sound cocky, but I have the courage to say so. From a unknown person in 2013; today I’m a wedding photographer that got booked from across the world almost half a year ahead. And I am proud!
